June 18, 2024
The Australian King’s Birthday Honours and Awards were celebrated on 10th June 2024. This year Ms Julie Millard was awarded an AM - a Member of the Order of Australia Award for significant service to the mental health sector. The Australian Honours and Awards system recognises the outstanding service and contributions of Australians. It gives the nation the chance to celebrate and acknowledge individuals who work tirelessly to improve communities and to make Australia a better place.
This recognition is bestowed upon Ms Millard for her work and contribution across mental health, advocacy and nursing, both in Australia and internationally. In Australia, Ms Millard has history as a social justice and equity advocate, a consultant in mental health, an educator, and as a Credentialed Mental Health Nurse. She works professionally as a consultant, where she advocates, develops and implements state and national projects, with a focus on promoting recovery and improving health outcomes for individuals, population groups and communities. In 2023 Julie was the recipient of the Exceptional Contributions to Mental Health Services in Australia Award [TheMHS Services Awards].
In the broader international arena, Julie holds multiple volunteer positions. Primarily as: Board Director of World Federation of Mental Health [WFMH]; former Regional Vice President Oceania Region [WFMH]; and Chair of the Women’s Mental Health Section [WFMH]. She is the Chair of the Oceania Mental Health Advisory Committee Webinar Working Group [WFMH], the Representative for Western Pacific Region for the Global Mental Health Action Network [GMHA], and a member of the Global Alliance for Mental Health Advocates
For Julie, being an advocate in mental health and a Mental Health Nurse, is a passion, not merely a career. Her commitment to mental health promotion, highlighting the needs of the Pacific region peoples, engaging with support of veterans and their families, and with the World Federation for Mental Health, Global Mental Health Action Network and the Global Alliance for Mental Health Advocates will be ongoing.
